Critical Thinking – Mental Health & Wellness, pt. 2

Since the pandemic, there has been more of a focus on mental health and wellness. We are interested in finding ways to improve mental health and wellness amongst the students.

Keeping it 100 / the decrease of common courtesy and manners

With the increase in Covid-19 cases, there has been an increase in rude, tactless, cruel, or just plain impolite comments, fights, and shootings. Perhaps because of the pandemic, everyone’s patience is a bit shorter. “It’ is making people irritable or having a shorter fuse or quicker to anger,” says Gail Saltz, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The Political Climate

Others believe that our current political client has eroded common courtesy. A recent survey finds that 74 percent of Americans think manners and behavior have deteriorated in the United States over the past several decades. ManyThose that are considered rude have pointed to the fight against cancel culture to justify some of their rude and disrespectful behavior.

Keeping it 100 / “Brutal Honesty”

Keeping it 100 means to be you, be honest, be true to yourself and the people you love, be unapologetic but respectful at the same time. Some simply don’t care whom they hurt, or how their comments are received. Some package that as “brutal honesty” but I have never understood why honesty needs to be “brutal”. Furthermore, one person’s truth is not another person’s truth.
